About Roles for People

When you want to share a dataset with others, LiveDataset makes it easy for large numbers of people to work with the same data, in an organized way — the way you want.

  • Allowing people to always see current data.
  • Managing who can change different segments of data.
  • Logging who makes changes and being able to reverse them.
  • Resolving conflicts if people try to simultaneously change the same data.
  • Quickly implementing a business process with different people performing different roles.

Roles

When you share your dataset with others, you will want to set some restrictions about what they can see and do.

We find it is more helpful to think of the different roles people perform with the dataset than what you want each individual to do.

Typical roles include

Read-only Can browse all information without making any changes.
Manager Can add, change, and delete data for their part of the organization.
Approver Makes decision, e.g. an executive approving a large spend.
Data administrator Can change all data, including correcting errors or making changes on behalf of others.
Account administrator Can make any changes to dataset, including the structure of the dataset and how people can access data.

We find that using this concept of roles, makes it easier to plan and maintain access as more and more people start using your datasets.
